High School Students and Parents

The world around us is changing at a record pace. Many jobs exist today weren't around 15 years ago. More are being created because of the advances of technology and our global economy. That's why it's so difficult to identify a career goal, let alone know how to pursue an education that will get them where they want to go, if they even know where they want to go!

  • Most High School students have no idea what careers are available beyond what they see on TV.
  • The student may not know how their interests and talents can be converted into a realistic caeer goal.
  • Even college students flounder, changing majors, graduating with a degree but with no idea of its relevance to the world of work, or worse, dropping out because they see no value in their education.
  • Even with a good education, young adults have difficulty succeeding in the world of work because they don't understand what an employer does, how the business is run, or the nuances that make up the profile of a "good employee."

Why are high schools failing to give meaningful career counseling and direction for life after high school?  Some of the reasons can include the following:

  • Administrators spend more time monitoring attendance and truancy instead of focusing on what will motivate the student to stay in school.
  • High school career counseling efforts are diluted by the number of students assigned to each counselor.
  • Career development programs employed by most high schools are not dynamic enough to take into account the unique aptitudes and interests of the individual, and help the individual focus energies into an appropriate career path.
  • With the overwhelming amount of students, individualized job placement assistance isn't possible.
